Like many Canadian students, you may be struggling to get your volunteer hours in before the school year ends. For some, volunteering may just mean getting in the necessary hours to graduate. For others, however, it means really trying to get involved and to make a difference in the lives of others.
The benefits of helping others or working with a worthy cause can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your lifetime. Volunteering helps you develop a passion for giving. It can help you discover the wider world around you, foster meaningful relationships and even build your resume. But if you’re not sure where to start, getting your hours can seem like a scary and daunting task. Don’t fret! There are tons of resources out there to help you get started.
Your first stop in finding a good place to volunteer is to check with your school and guidance counsellor. Your school board has a list of pre-approved volunteer activities. You can ask a teacher or guidance counsellor for the list and for the full set of rules and guidelines. If you think of something that isn’t on the list, you can always talk to your teacher to see if your school principal will agree to it.
